When first learning about types of wines and experiencing them for the first time, it can sometimes be difficult to remember everything. With so many different varieties and areas of production, wines can be presented in many different ways. White wines, which are generally created by removing the grapes’ skins before fermentation, can come in many different varieties. Made either bubbly or still, here are a few of the most common types of white wine.

Chardonnay

Throughout the 1990’s, the most popular white grape was chardonnay. Originating in Burgundy, France, chardonnay wine is known for being very versatile, flourishing under many different climates. With such a popular and versatile grape, it is no surprise that Chardonnay wines are well known and generally well liked.

Chardonnay wines are often described as more velvety than other whites. With a slight creaminess, the flavors of lemon and grapefruit are commonly recognized in the taste, along with vanilla and toffee. Chardonnay is often paired with lighter dishes, such as chicken and fish.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is also well known and liked in the category of white wine. Paired with a variety of foods, Sauvignon Blanc is known for its versatility. Seafood and poultry are a common choice of dish, along with many different styles of salads.

Sauvignon Blanc often has a hint of an herbal taste, perhaps of peppers or grass. With flavors ranging from sour fruits to a tropical mango, Sauvignon Blancs can come in many different varieties.

Semillon

Semillon grapes are a popular and widespread white grape in France. Also grown in other regions throughout the world, Semillon is a popular choice in wine. Common pairing choices for dry Semillon are clams and pasta, although it might also be served with fish.

With a unique fig-like taste, Semillon is often a good choice for a blend. When blended with Sauvignon Blanc, the combination produces a syrupy texture and a full body taste that is entirely unique and delicious.

Moscato

In contrast to many other whites, Moscato is often best taken on its own, or perhaps with a light dessert. With a memorable fruity taste and a musky scent, Moscato wines are often easy to identify.

Pinot Grigio

Generally creating more acidic wines, pinot grigio is grown and planted in many areas of Italy and the USA. With a crisp taste and an acid bite, Pinot Grigio wines are often paired well with certain spicy foods, such as Thai and Chinese cuisine.

Gewürztraminer

For individuals looking for very aromatic wines, Gewürztraminer can be an excellent choice. With very fruity flavors and sweet aromas, Gewürztraminer wines are often used for sipping.

Riesling

When compared to Chardonnay, Riesling wines are generally considered much lighter. With a light, fresh taste, and an aroma that often resembles fresh apples, Riesling can be a great choice to be paired with fish or chicken.

Riesling wines can taste very different depending on their region. Germany’s Rieslings, for example, are often slightly sweet with a balancing proportion of acidity. Alsace and the Eastern US also create excellent Riesling, with an equally pleasant aroma but with a slightly drier taste.

Conclusion

With so many different varieties, there are white wines for nearly everyone. To discover your own favorites, the best thing to do is to experiment. Tasting different white wines with different food selections can give you some good insights, giving you confidence and experience for the future.
